Alan Donovan a41fc9869a internal/lsp/cache: use [256]byte Hash instead of hex digit string
I had hoped to see a reduction in total allocation, but it does not
appear to be significant according to the included crude benchmark.
Nonetheless this is a slight code clarity improvement.

Robert Findley a3d129cecf internal/lsp/cache: extract module load errors when go.work is used
When using go.work, the go command packs module-specific errors into
synthetic results corresponding to the module query ("modulepath/...").

Extract these for use in diagnostics, by packing them into a new

Alan Donovan 63dfc2d3a9 internal/lsp/cache: two minor optimizations
1. Avoid unnecessary intermediate map updates.
2. Avoid accumulating defers in a loop when the control is simple.

Yield: -10% CPU, -37% allocs.

Typical results:

$ go test -v ./gopls/internal/regtest/bench -run=TestBenchmarkDidChange -didchange_dir=$HOME/w/kubernetes -didchange_file=pkg/util/hash/hash.go
Before:
BenchmarkStatistics 100 25932206 ns/op	11684109 B/op 75458 allocs/op
After:
BenchmarkStatistics 100 23294195 ns/op	11293472 B/op 47299 allocs/op

Also, move profiling logic outside the loop so that later runs
don't overwrite earlier runs. (This doesn't appear to be a problem
in practice, presumably because the last run is the big one.)

Robert Findley 76325da620 internal/lsp/progress: detach context for all progress notifications
Use a detached Context for all progress notifications. In particular,
using a detached Context for the window/workDoneProgress/create
notification avoids races where the $/cancelRequest notification and
create response cross paths, such that the client has created a progress
dialog but the server thinks that starting progress failed.

Also, as a matter of best practice don't store a context on the WorkDone
type, despite the fact that this Context is detached. Instead, only
close over a Context in the WorkDoneWriter, which requires a Context in
order to function but which implements the io.Writer interface.

The TestProgressBarErrors test should now pass reliably.

Robert Findley 2bb78cf04e internal/lsp: add missing bug reporting, and panic during marker tests
Add additional bug reporting related to position invariants, and update
marker test runners to panic on encountered bugs.

This revealed a panic on older Go versions, where we try to create a

for this case, and leave a big comment explaining that
checkForOrphanedFile probably shouldn't be so tolerant of invalid calls.

Robert Findley ccb10502d1 internal/lsp/cache: invalidate metadata when parsing issues resolve
Package loading (at least via go list) fails when the import header
doesn't parse, so we need to invalidate metadata upon a state change
from non parsing->parsing. Refactor metadata invalidation to implement
this feature, add additional documentation, and avoid unnecessary work.

This change revealed a latent bug (via TestDeleteDirectory): when
statting a deleted directory failed, we could fail to invalidate any
package IDs, even those we already knew about. This bug was masked by
the somewhat complicated semantics of pkgNameChanged. The semantics of
pkgNameChanged are simplified to encapsulate any change to a
package->file association.

Also refactor the parsing API somewhat, and add a bug report if we don't
get a ParseGoFile while inspecting for metadata changes.

Update most regtests to panic upon receiving bug reports.

Jonathan Amsterdam 4dd2c74a9b internal/govulncheck: copy from x/vuln repo
Currently, gopls maintains an edited copy of the govulncheck command
logic in the internal/vulncheck directory, along with the necessary
glue to make it work with gopls.

This CL is the first in a sequence that will make it easier for gopls
to use that logic.

It creates a new package, internal/govulncheck, adds a script to copy
the corresponding package from the x/vuln repo, and removes the cache
in internal/vulncheck in favor of the copied one.

Although it might appear simpler to copy the .go files directly into
internal/vulncheck, that would require editing the package directives
in the files, and has the risk of overwriting files.

Robert Findley 090b14e850 internal/lsp/regtest: make TestResolveImportCycle robust to error order
In JSON output, the Go command was only setting the Error field for one
package involved in an import cycle. As a result, TestResolveImportCycle
was dependent on the chosen package, causing flakes when the chosen
package is not deterministic.

Arguably this behavior should be fixed, both in the go command and in
gopls, but for now make the test resilient to choice by asserting on any
of the possible errors.

Add a new AnyOf expectation to support this type of assertion and tweak the
test output formatting. Also update the test to eagerly fail once the
didOpen notification has been fully processed, so that we don't have to
wait for the assertion timeout.

Robert Findley d303668635 internal/lsp/cache: use cached parsed files for symbols, if available
Optimize building the symbol index for a file, in two ways:
 - use the cached full parse tree, if it already exists
 - if it doesn't exist, optimize parsing by skipping both comments and
object resolution, which aren't necessary for symbols

This results in around 3x faster initial indexing of symbols. In my
manual testing, indexing of Kubernetes went from 16s->5s, and indexing
of x/tools went from 2.4s->700ms.

Also fix a typo in gopls/internal/regtest/bench/bench_test.go.

There can be a thousand callstacks. Currently the limit is 64.

Maybe we can do a better job to filter and choose the important

and get three callstacks when we want to report only 1,

  A -> B -> V
  C -> B -> V
  B -> V

one can favor B->V because that's where fixing needs to happen.

This is a command that runs govulncheck-like analysis.
This is highly experimental and can change any time,
so we mark it with the "Exp" suffix. Once the interface
becomes stable, we will rename this command.

It returns VulncheckResult that can be encoded as
a JSON message. The result includes all potentially
affecting vulnerabilities, and sample traces.

This feature is currently available only when gopls
is compiled with go1.18. Otherwise, the command will
return an error.

Daniel Martí 19fe2d77ce gopls: update xurls dependency, remove \b workaround
Update to v2.4.0, which brings optimizations and minor improvements.

Upstream fixed the issue with word breaks in v2.3.0,
released back in July 2021. For more, see:
https://github.com/mvdan/xurls/issues/49

In short, ASCII TLDs now require a word break in Relaxed again.
Note that non-ASCII TLDs don't require one, as that just breaks them.
So, in that sense, this is making non-ASCII TLDs work in gopls again.

Plus, we avoid wasting CPU cycles at init time by rebuilding the regexp.

This analyzer was written at a time when any was only allowed in

Any is now allowed anywhere, and so it is inconsistent to suggest it

everywhere, as that would be incredibly noisy.

Perhaps we should remove this analyzer, but for now simply change it to

Marwan Sulaiman 70c3ea29e2 gopls,internal/lsp: Implement method stubbing via CodeAction
This CL adds a quickfix CodeAction that detects "missing method"
compiler errors and suggests adding method stubs to the concrete
type that would implement the interface. There are many ways that
a user might indicate a concrete type is meant to be used as an interface.
This PR detects two types of those errors: variable declaration and function returns.
For variable declarations, things like the following should be detected:
1. var _ SomeInterface = SomeType{}
2. var _ = SomeInterface(SomeType{})
3. var _ SomeInterface = (*SomeType)(nil)
For function returns, the following example is the primary detection:
func newIface() SomeInterface {
	return &SomeType{}
}
More detections can be added in the future of course.

Heschi Kreinick 414ec9c3f0 internal/lsp: add ListImports
The VS Code extension uses information about imports to figure out
whether a given function is a Testify test. As of writing, it asks:
- Does the file import Testify?
- Does the package it's in do so?
To answer these questions, add ListImports, which tells you about the
packages imported by the current file, including their import name,
plus the import paths of all imports in the entire package.

I suspect the latter may be wrong in the presence of GOPATH vendoring,
but that should be a relatively rare situation at this point so I didn't
bother testing.

Robert Findley 25d2ab26ce internal/lsp/cache: fixes for workspace invalidation
This CL fixes a several bugs in workspace invalidation:
 - When invalidating the workspace due to a change in gopls.mod or
go.work files, we should not update the workspace if the change does
not parse. There was a comment to this effect, but it was not
   properly implemented.
 - Check go.work before gopls.mod, consistent with our intitial
   workspace load.
 - If we get an 'unchanged' change (such as a save) to go.work, don't
   continue looking for gopls.mod.

A regression test that inadvertently relied on our mishandling of broken
go.work files is updated to have the correct syntax. A new regtest
expectation is added to assert on a clean workspace.

Bryan C. Mills c20fd7c261 internal/lsp/regtest: eliminate arbitrary timeouts
We care that gopls operations complete within a reasonable time.
However, what is “reasonable” depends strongly on the specifics of the
user and the hardware they are running on: a timeout that would be
perfectly reasonable on a high-powered user workstation with little
other load may be far too short on an overloaded and/or underpowered
CI builder.

This change adjusts the regtest runner to use the test deadline
instead of an arbitrary, flag-defined timeout; we expect the user or
system running the test to scale the test timeout appropriately to the
specific platform and system load.

When the testing package gains support for per-test timeouts
(golang/go#48157), this approach will automatically apply those
timeouts too.

If we decide that we also want to test specific performance and/or
latency targets, we can set up specific configurations for that (as
either aggressive per-test timeouts or benchmarks) in a followup
change.

A_D eb07148636 gopls: add string join/split postfix completions
This adds two new snippets, centred around string manipulation.

The first snippet applies to variables of type string, and is called
split. When used, it replaces `someStringVar.split!` with
`strings.Split(someStringVar, "|")`, where `|` indicates the location of
the cursor.

The second snippet is essentially the same as the first, but in
"reverse". Meaning that rather than going from a string to a slice of
strings, it goes from a slice of strings to a single string:
`someStringSlice.join!` -> `strings.Join(someStringSlice, "|")`.

Robert Findley e5f719fbe6 internal/lsp/source: consider test variants when finding pkg from pos
When resolving a position to a package we must consider all packages,
including intermediate test variants. This manifests, for example, when
jumping to definition in a package that is imported as a test variant
(see golang/go#47825).

For now, fix this by threading through an 'includeTestVariants' flag to
PackagesForFile. This isn't pretty, but should be a trivially safe
change: the only effect will be to increase the number of packages
considered in FindPackageFromPos. Since we are discussing future changes
to the API for querying packages from the snapshot, now did not seem
like a good time to undertake significant refactoring.

A regtest based on the original issue is included.

This CL is joint with rstambler@golang.org.

internal/lsp/source/api_json.go were inconsistent here. I'm assuming
the latter also shows up as user-visible documentation somewhere,
probably in the VSCode plugin.

It is unlikely that users want gopls operating on their node_modules

This doesn't exclude *any* directory named "node_modules", so we still

Matthew Dempsky d4cc65f0b2 gopls/internal/regtest/codelens: avoid compiler bug
Because of how the compiler internally represents variable references,
it sometimes gets position information incorrectly for them. The
codelens test hits this issue because for

	var x string
	fmt.Println(x)

the diagnostic about "x" escaping to heap (which actually refers to
the implicit conversion to "interface{}" type) should be rightly
reported at the "x" identifier within the call arguments list.
However, due to the aforementioned compiler bug, historically we
reported the diagnostic at the "(" token instead.

In -G=3 mode, the compiler (correctly) report the diagnostic at "x"
instead; but with GOEXPERIMENT=unified, the compiler intentionally
matches the original -G=0 behavior and continues reporting at "("
instead.

This CL avoids the issue entirely by changing the line to
"fmt.Println(42)", which avoids the issue because the compiler always
correctly prints the diagnostic then at "42".

Rob Findley 6932d22acd internal/lsp/source: recursively search for qualified objects
When searching for references or renaming, we start from all packages
containing the current position. But as reported in golang/go#47564,
this fails if we're renaming an object in another package; we need to
start the search from the package containing the object definition.

This CL finds the missing packages by recursively searching all
locations we encounter. For now, this will cause us to consider the
object location, and may also help us behave correctly with respect to
build constraint variants in the future.

While at it, update the regtests to support renaming. This bug could
be exercised with marker tests, but it's good to have a regtest for
renaming anyway.

Muir Manders 749a5cd4ad gopls/internal/regtest: fix completion benchmarks
I fixed a check in sandbox.go to check for size of config.Files
instead of nilness. The completion benchmarks run with an absolute
path workdir and were failing this check due to a non-nil but empty
config.Files.

I tweaked the benchmark output so it is compatible with benchstat. In
particular, the benchmark output now appears all on one line for an
imaginary benchmark named BenchmarkStatistics.

I also made a couple changes to the completion benchmarks:
- Don't modify the buffer before every completion. Type checking
completely dominates completion, so if it has to type check every
time then you aren't benchmarking the completion code at all.
- Don't try to exclude GC from the benchmark. I think amortized GC
time should be included in the benchmark timing. Plus, I'm not sure
that forcing a GC every 10 iterations was actually doing a good job
  excluding GC from the benchmark.

 - Incorrect computation of edits when the imports source prefix is

This is an unsatisfying solution, necessary because of the interaction

Rob Findley 251f283686 internal/lsp: add a setting to batch didChangeWatchedFile notifications
Gopls's serial processing of didChangeWatchedFile notifications has
historically been a pain point for clients that don't batch file events,
when branch switching or running go generate.

It's "not that tricky" for us to debounce and batch up watched file
notifications on our end, so this CL introduces this functionality as a
new experimental setting. Truth be told it ended up being harder than
expected, due to (1) our requirement for regtests to be able to
determine when diagnostics have completed, and (2) our reliance on
jsonrpc2 for sequencing changes to the server.

To address (1), I factored out the actual processing of change
notifications into a separate method (thus increasing our surprisingly
long chain of method calls). To address (2), I guarded the processing of
file changes with a mutex.

I also guarded some places where views and snapshots were accessed in
potentially racy ways. Our interaction with session.views was rather
complicated, so I had to switch session.viewsMu to a RWMutex.

Add this to the experimental regtest mode, and more generally enable all
experimental features in this mode, rather than just the experimental
workspace module.

Rebecca Stambler da404b52bc internal/lsp: start parsing go.work file like gopls.mod file
Allow users to experiment with golang/go#45713 by adding experimental
support for the go.work file. We handle it like a special case, very
similar to the current gopls.mod file mechanism. The behavior is
undefined if both a gopls.mod and go.work file exist. Ultimately, we
will deprecate support for the gopls.mod file if the go.work file
proposal is accepted, so I don't think it's important to be careful
about handling both simultaneously.

Rebecca Stambler b12e6172dc internal/lsp/cache: don't delete metadata until it's reloaded
Retrying CL 271477, this time with parts of CL 322650 incorporated.

This CL moves to a model where we don't automatically delete invalidated
metadata, but rather preserve it and mark it invalid. This way, we can
continue to use invalid metadata for all features even if there is an
issue with the user's workspace.

To keep track of the metadata's validity, we add an invalid flag to
track the status of the metadata. We still reload at the same rate--the
next CL changes the way we reload data.

We also add a configuration to opt-in (currently, this is off by
default).

In some cases, like switches between GOPATH and module modes, and when a
file is deleted, the metadata *must* be deleted outright.

Also, handle an empty GOMODCACHE in the directory filters (from a
previous CL).

Rob Findley 9aa007ed16 internal/lsp/cache: invalidate broken packages when imports are deleted
In the presence of an import cycle, packages.Load will exclude the
problematic import from Package.Imports. This missing edge means that we
wouldn't correctly invalidate broken package metadata when a problematic
import is deleted. We also weren't treating import deletion as a change
that could invalidate metadata.

Fix this by invalidating any broken packages when an import path is
deleted, anywhere. This could be overly coarse, but there are various
problems with trying to do better.

Also change cycle errors from TypeError to ListError, as this
categorization was misleading.

Muir Manders b579874149 lsp/completion: reorganize how we track candidate type mods
"type mod" refers to agglutinative expressions such as dereference
"*", invocation "()", and slicing "[:]". When considering an object as
a completion candidate, we check whether applying a type mod would
make it a better candidate.

Previously we tracked the type mods we wanted to apply to a candidate
by setting bool fields. Now instead we keep a slice of the type mods.
This has two main advantages:
- The mods are now ordered which will allow us to format candidates
properly when the same mods can appear in different order (e.g.
  "<-*foo" or *<-foo").
- We can now record any mod multiple times allowing for "<-<-foo" or
  "foo()()".

I changed the formatting code to always create a snippet object since
that made things simpler. I had to tweak a few snippet helper methods
to accept a snippet argument rather than creating a new snippet.

This commit's only functional change is that we no longer show any
type mods in candidate labels. For example, the user will now see
"foo" in the completion popup instead of "*foo". Showing the operators
adds noise to the candidate list, and we didn't display them
consistently.

Rob Findley fa05545715 internal/lsp/debug: add a facility to track known bugs
Sometimes users report issues related to edge cases in Gopls that aren't
reproducible. In some of these cases, we end up guarding against
conditions that shouldn't be possible, which is an unfortunately fragile
solution.

Add a new debug.Bug function to both annotate such branches as known
bugs, and help find them when they reoccur. For now this just records
them in the debug server, but in the future we could send the user a
message to the effect of "hey, a known bug has occurred" for debug
builds of gopls.

Also included are some minor cosmetic fixes.

Rob Findley f4a41298b9 internal/lsp/regtest: add a benchmark for didChange
Add a benchmark for the processing of workspace/didChange notifications,
attempting to isolate the synchronous change processing from
asynchronous diagnostics. To enable this, add a new type of expectation
that asserts on work that has been _started_, but not necessarily
completed. Of course, what we really want to know is whether the current
notification has been processed, but that's ~equivalent to knowing
whether the next one has been started. Really, it's off-by-one, but
amortized over e.g. the 100 iterations of a benchmark we get
approximately the right results.

Also change some functions to accept testing.TB, because in a first pass
at this I modified the regtest framework to operate on testing.B in
addition to testing.T... but that didn't work out as IWL is just too
slow to execute the benchmarks outside of the environment -- even though
we can ResetTimer, the benchmark execution is just too slow to be
usable. It seems like a fine change to accept testing.TB is some places,
though.

CL 315210 it is upgraded to a lazy module the first time it is edited

I don't know why this case doesn't exhibit the expected failure mode
when lazy loading is enabled — I guess it's because we attribute the
checksum error to the individual package that needs it instead of the
module as a whole? — but I can't follow this test well enough to
figure out whether there is actually a real problem for lazy modules
here. If there is, we can handle that by adding a new, separate test.

Add a new snapshot method IsBuiltin, which is used to avoid calling

PackagesForFile should always return something.

This exacerbated an existing race to building the builtin, because

Heschi Kreinick e435455aa1 internal/lsp: introduce MemoryMode
We still hear from users for whom gopls uses too much memory. My efforts
to reduce memory usage while maintaining functionality are proving
fruitless, so perhaps it's time to accept some functionality loss.

DegradeClosed MemoryMode typechecks all packages in ParseExported mode
unless they have a file open. This should dramatically reduce memory
usage in monorepo-style scenarious, where a ton of packages are in the
workspace and the user might plausibly want to edit any of them.
(Otherwise they should consider using directory filters.)

The cost is that features that work across multiple packages...won't.
Find references, for example, will only find uses in open packages or in
the exported declarations of closed packages.

The current implementation is a bit leaky; we keep the ParseFull
packages in memory even once all their files are closed. This is related
to a general failure on our part to drop unused packages from the
snapshot, so I'm not going to try to fix it here.

Updates golang/go#45457, golang/go#45363.

Muir Manders 09058ab085 internal/lsp/source/completion: add postfix snippet completions
Postfix snippets are artificial methods that allow the user to compose
common operations in an "argument oriented" fashion. For example,
instead of "sort.Slice(someSlice, ...)" a user can expand
"someSlice.sort!". The snippet labels end in "!" to make it clearer
they do something potentially unexpected. The postfix snippets have
low scores so they should not interfere with normal completions.

The snippets are represented (almost) entirely as Go text/template
templates. This way the user can create custom snippets to match their
general preferences or to capture common patterns in their codebase.
There is currently no way for the user to create snippets, but it
could be accomplished with a configuration file, custom LSP command,
or similar.

I started by implementing a variety of snippets to help flesh out the
various facilities needed by the templates. The most interesting
template capabilities are:
 - The ability to import packages as necessary (e.g. "sort" must be
   imported to call sort.Slice()).
 - The ability to generate unique variable names to avoid accidental
   shadowing issues.
 - The ability to weave LSP snippets into the template. Currently,
only {{.Cursor}} is exposed, which corresponds to the snippet's
   final tab stop.

Briefly, these are the postfix snippets in this commit:
 - foo.sort => sort.Slice(foo, func(...){}) (slices)
 - foo.last => foo[len(foo)-1] (slices)
 - foo.reverse (slices)
 - foo.range => for i, v := range foo {} (slices/maps)
 - foo.append
This snippet inserts a self-assignment append statement when
appropriate, otherwise just an append expression.
 - foo.copy creates a copy of a slice
 - foo.clear empties out a map
 - foo.keys creates slice of keys
 - foo().var assigns result value(s) to variables
 - foo.print prints foo to stdout

Some of these are probably not very useful in practice, and I'm sure
there are lots of great ones I didn't think of.

Updates golang/go#39507.

Heschi Kreinick aa0c72341e internal/lsp/cache: get control of reloadOrphanedFiles
According to its comment, reloadOrphanedFiles is intended to work around
overlay bugs. But as of 1.16, there are no overlay bugs that we know of.
So what is it still doing?

Apparently, quite a bit, not much of it useful. Clean up as much as
possible.

- Files with no valid package declaration are ignored by the go command.
There's no point trying to reload them; stop.
- During metadata invalidation, we clear out all IDs for a file, even if
only one of its IDs is invalidated, e.g. when a test package is removed.
That leaves valid metadata for the non-test, so we don't refresh it in
the workspace reload, and only catch it as an orphan. It seems to me we
should only remove the invalidated ID.
- If the client incorrectly sends us a didOpen for a non-Go file, we
will attempt to load it as an orphaned file. Fix the regtest that did
that.
- TestEmptyGOPATHXTest_40825 set up an invalid GOPATH: you can't work in
GOPATH/src. However, it exists to test code that no longer exists, so
just delete it.

After this change, almost none of the regression tests trigger orphaned
file reloading. It's difficult/impractical to rule it out entirely
because some of them only appear racily. Since I intend to remove the
code path, I'm not too worried about more creeping in before I'm done.

The only useful case is multiple ad-hoc packages. Because we only
allow one "command-line-arguments" package in the workspace, if you
switch between two the old one becomes orphaned. I hope to work on that
soon.

Heschi Kreinick 144d5ced6b internal/lsp: run type error analyzers as part of diagnostics
Type error analyzers can be viewed as enhancing type errors, rather
than analyzers in their own right. Create a source.DiagnosePackage
function that combines the list/parse/typecheck diagnostics with type
error analyzers. This allows us to remove some special cases from the
analysis path, and is a first step in removing all the special
handling for analysis quick fixes.

Along the way:
Pass pointers to source.Analyzer after I spent half an hour chasing a
loop capture bug. Spend a further 2-3 hours chasing slowdown in the
command tests as a result.

Move Unnecessary tag generation into diagnostic creation rather than
as a mutating post-processing step that required cloning diagnostics.
