Julio Montes 673fdea5e7 syscall: allow processes steal a controlling terminal on Linux
The current implementation of forkAndExecInChild for Linux does not allow
spawned processes steal the controlling terminal from a different session
group. This patch passes 1 as the argument to TIOCSCTTY in order to allow
spawned processes steal controlling terminals.

Ronald G. Minnich d8ed449d8e os/exec: handle Unshareflags with CLONE_NEWNS
In some newer Linux distros, systemd forces
all mount namespaces to be shared, starting
at /. This disables the CLONE_NEWNS
flag in unshare(2) and clone(2).
While this problem is most commonly seen
on systems with systemd, it can happen anywhere,
due to how Linux namespaces now work.

Hence, to create a private mount namespace,
it is not sufficient to just set
CLONE_NEWS; you have to call mount(2) to change
the behavior of namespaces, i.e.
mount("none", "/", NULL, MS_REC|MS_PRIVATE, NULL)

This is tested and working and we can now correctly
start child process with private namespaces on Linux
distros that use systemd.

The new test works correctly on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS.
It fails if I comment out the new Mount, and
succeeds otherwise. In each case it correctly
cleans up after itself.

Richard Musiol 9e6b79a5df syscall: use CLONE_VFORK and CLONE_VM
This greatly improves the latency of starting a child process when
the Go process is using a lot of memory. Even though the kernel uses
copy-on-write, preparation for that can take up to several 100ms under
certain conditions. All other goroutines are suspended while starting
a subprocess so this latency directly affects total throughput.

With CLONE_VM the child process shares the same memory with the parent
process. On its own this would lead to conflicting use of the same
memory, so CLONE_VFORK is used to suspend the parent process until the
child releases the memory when switching to to the new program binary
via the exec syscall. When the parent process continues to run, one
has to consider the changes to memory that the child process did,
namely the return address of the syscall function needs to be restored
from a register.

A simple benchmark has shown a difference in latency of 16ms vs. 0.5ms
at 10GB memory usage. However, much higher latencies of several 100ms
have been observed in real world scenarios. For more information see
comments on #5838.

If the caller set ups a Credential in os/exec.Command,

Only root can call setgroups(2) on BSD kernels, which causes Start to

Change the openbsd runtime to use the current sys_kill and sys_thrkill
system calls.

Prior to OpenBSD 5.9 the sys_kill system call could be used with both
processes and threads. In OpenBSD 5.9 this functionality was split into
a sys_kill system call for processes (with a new syscall number) and a
sys_thrkill system call for threads. The original/legacy system call was
retained in OpenBSD 5.9 and OpenBSD 6.0, however has been removed and
will not exist in the upcoming OpenBSD 6.1 release.

Note: This change is needed to make Go work on OpenBSD 6.1 (to be
released in May 2017) and should be included in the Go 1.8 release.
This change also drops support for OpenBSD 5.8, which is already an

Removing X__cmsg_data will prevent Go code that uses X__cmsg_data from
compiling, but removing the unsafe cast will cause Go code that uses
X__cmsg_data to fail or exhibit undefined behavior at runtime. It was
therefore decided that removing X__cmsg_data was the better option.

All the implementations of NsecToTimespec and NsecToTimeval were the

The logic in NsecToTimespec and NsecToTimeval caused times before 1970

contain a positive number; for consistency, we do this for both

The Darwin-only restriction was because we were late in the Go 1.7

In the process, I noticed Gettimeofday wasn't in the "unimplemented

original go1.txt:

pkg syscall, func Gettimeofday(*Timeval) error

So, add it, returning ENOSYS like the others.

This new comment can be used to declare that the uintptr arguments to a
function may be converted from pointers, and that those pointers should
be considered to escape. This is used for the Call methods in
dll_windows.go that take uintptr arguments, because they call Syscall.

We can't treat these functions as we do syscall.Syscall, because unlike
Syscall they may cause the stack to grow. For Syscall we can assume that
stack arguments can remain on the stack, but for these functions we need
them to escape.

Alex Brainman b6712946c1 runtime: make mksyscall_windows.go flags do what they say they do
The -systemdll and -xsys flags generate broken code in some situations
(see issue for details). Fix all that.

This CL only fixes bugs in existing code, but I have more changes comming:

golang.org/x/sys/windows is not the only package that uses mksyscall_windows.go.
golang.org/x/exp/shiny and github.com/derekparker/delve do too. I also have
few personal packages that use mksyscall_windows.go. None of those packages
are aware of new -xsys flag. I would like to change mksyscall_windows.go, so
external packages do not need to use -xsys flag. I would love to get rid of
-xsys flag altogether, but I don't see how it is possible. So I will, probably,
replace -xsys with a flag that means opposite to -xsys, and use new flag
everywhere in standard libraries. Flag name suggestions are welcome.

-systemdll flag makes users code more "secure". I would like to make -systemdll
behaviour a default for all mksyscall_windows.go users. We use that already in
standard library. If we think "secure" is important, we should encourage it in
all users code. If mksyscall_windows.go user insist on using old code, provide
-use_old_loaddll (need good name here) flag for that. So -systemdll flag will
be replaced with -use_old_loaddll.

Richard Miller 639a20da90 syscall: simplify closing of extra fds in plan9 StartProcess
Reviving earlier work by @ality in https://golang.org/cl/57890043
to make the closing of extra file descriptors in syscall.StartProcess
less race-prone. Instead of making a list of open fds in the parent
before forking, the child can read through the list of open fds and
close the ones not explicitly requested. Also eliminate the
complication of keeping open any extra fds which were inherited by
the parent when it started.

This CL will be followed by one to eliminate the ForkLock in plan9,
which is now redundant.

Michael Munday af74dca497 syscall: add support for s390x
On s390x char is unsigned. We cannot force it to be signed using

public and we need to stick as closely as possible to it to avoid
breaking existing projects. In order to match the gccgo API we
also force the RawSockaddr.Data and RawSockaddrUnix.Path fields
to be signed.

This CL adds a post-processing pass (mkpost.go) to mkall.sh in
order to export the types of fields in PtraceRegs on s390x
without affecting the API on other platforms. The types of these
fields match their counterparts in gccgo. mkpost.go also cleans
up the Pad_cgo* fields and X_* fields (these fields are not
exported by gccgo currently). It could be extended to add build
tags on platforms that need them.

Richard Miller f2f2434d47 syscall: avoid failure in plan9 StartProcess from fd close race
Between the enumeration of fdsToClose in the parent and the
closing of fds in the child, it's possible for a file to be
closed in another thread. If that file descriptor is reused
when opening the child-parent status pipe, it will be closed
prematurely in the child and the forkExec gets out of sync.
This has been observed to cause failures in builder tests
when the link step of a build is started before the compile
step has run, with "file does not exist" messages as the
visible symptom.

The simple workaround is to check against closing the pipe.
A more comprehensive solution would be to rewrite the fd
closing code to avoid races, along the lines of the long
ago proposed https://golang.org/cl/57890043 - but meanwhile
this correction will prevent some builder failures.

Russ Cox 1ac637c766 cmd/compile: recognize Syscall-like functions for liveness analysis
Consider this code:

	func f(*int)

	func g() {
		p := new(int)
		f(p)
	}

where f is an assembly function.
In general liveness analysis assumes that during the call to f, p is dead
in this frame. If f has retained p, p will be found alive in f's frame and keep
the new(int) from being garbage collected. This is all correct and works.
We use the Go func declaration for f to give the assembly function
liveness information (the arguments are assumed live for the entire call).

Now consider this code:

	func h1() {
		p := new(int)
		syscall.Syscall(1, 2, 3, uintptr(unsafe.Pointer(p)))
	}

Here syscall.Syscall is taking the place of f, but because its arguments
are uintptr, the liveness analysis and the garbage collector ignore them.
Since p is no longer live in h once the call starts, if the garbage collector
scans the stack while the system call is blocked, it will find no reference
to the new(int) and reclaim it. If the kernel is going to write to *p once
the call finishes, reclaiming the memory is a mistake.

We can't change the arguments or the liveness information for
syscall.Syscall itself, both for compatibility and because sometimes the
arguments really are integers, and the garbage collector will get quite upset
if it finds an integer where it expects a pointer. The problem is that
these arguments are fundamentally untyped.

The solution we have taken in the syscall package's wrappers in past
releases is to insert a call to a dummy function named "use", to make
it look like the argument is live during the call to syscall.Syscall:

	func h2() {
		p := new(int)
		syscall.Syscall(1, 2, 3, uintptr(unsafe.Pointer(p)))
		use(unsafe.Pointer(p))
	}

Keeping p alive during the call means that if the garbage collector
scans the stack during the system call now, it will find the reference to p.

Unfortunately, this approach is not available to users outside syscall,
because 'use' is unexported, and people also have to realize they need
to use it and do so. There is much existing code using syscall.Syscall
without a 'use'-like function. That code will fail very occasionally in
mysterious ways (see #13372).

This CL fixes all that existing code by making the compiler do the right
thing automatically, without any code modifications. That is, it takes h1
above, which is incorrect code today, and makes it correct code.

Specifically, if the compiler sees a foreign func definition (one
without a body) that has uintptr arguments, it marks those arguments
as "unsafe uintptrs". If it later sees the function being called
with uintptr(unsafe.Pointer(x)) as an argument, it arranges to mark x
as having escaped, and it makes sure to hold x in a live temporary
variable until the call returns, so that the garbage collector cannot
reclaim whatever heap memory x points to.

For now I am leaving the explicit calls to use in package syscall,
but they can be removed early in a future cycle (likely Go 1.7).

The rule has no effect on escape analysis, only on liveness analysis.

Fixes #13372.

code, which ran on startup, fail, even though it was not used.

Removing srpc_nacl.go for a total diff of -822 lines has got to count
as one of the easiest nacl fixes we've had to date.

Aram Hăvărneanu fe5ef5c9d7 runtime, syscall: link Solaris binaries directly instead of using dlopen/dlsym
Before CL 8214 (use .plt instead of .got on Solaris) Solaris used a
dynamic linking scheme that didn't permit lazy binding. To speed program
startup, Go binaries only used it for a small number of symbols required
by the runtime. Other symbols were resolved on demand on first use, and
were cached for subsequent use. This required some moderately complex
code in the syscall package.

CL 8214 changed the way dynamic linking is implemented, and now lazy
binding is supported. As now all symbols are resolved lazily by the
dynamic loader, there is no need for the complex code in the syscall
package that did the same. This CL makes Go programs link directly
with the necessary shared libraries and deletes the lazy-loading code
implemented in Go.

Ian Lance Taylor 28074d5baa syscall: change Dup,Dup2,Dup3 to use Syscall, not RawSyscall
This avoids hanging when a Go program uses a FUSE filesystem and the

RawSyscall then the goroutine calling dup will occupy a scheduler slot

Changing to Syscall avoids the problem. This makes Dup a tiny bit

https://codereview.chromium.org/550523002. And the new syscall
was introduced in https://codereview.chromium.org/537543003.

Accepting this will remove the support for older version of
sel_ldr. I've confirmed that both pepper_40 and current
pepper_canary have this syscall.

After this change, we need sel_ldr from pepper_39 or above to
work.

This proposal tackles the body of syscalls which have been replaced,
and are now deprecated in linux. This is needed for the arm64 port as
arm64 is the first linux architecture to remove the "legacy" forms of
these syscalls.

The *AT variants were added in kernel 2.6.16, so well before our 2.6.23
cutoff (hey, it'll even work on RHEL5).

Updates #9974

This proposal moves the definition of Dup2 from the generic syscall_linux.go
to the GOOS specific variants. This is in preparation for the arm64 port.

For all existing platforms Dup2 is not affected. When arm64 is added we'll use
either a forwarding method to Dup3 or

	//sysnb        Dup2(oldfd int, newfd int) (err error) = SYS_DUP3

Because mksycall.pl does not sort symbols before generating the output file
the diff includes some unavoidable code moves as Dup2 is processed latter in
the run.

Russ Cox 2d53d6b5d5 undo CL 131750044 / 2d6d44ceb80e
Breaks reading from stdin in parent after exec with SysProcAttr{Setpgid: true}.

package main

import (

        "os"
        "os/exec"
        "syscall"
)

func main() {

        cmd.SysProcAttr = &syscall.SysProcAttr{Setpgid: true}
        cmd.Run()

        fmt.Printf("Hit enter:")
        os.Stdin.Read(make([]byte, 100))
        fmt.Printf("Bye\n")

In go1.3, I type enter at the prompt and the program exits.
With the CL being rolled back, the program wedges at the
prompt.

Russ Cox 193daab988 cmd/cc, cmd/ld, runtime: disallow conservative data/bss objects
In linker, refuse to write conservative (array of pointers) as the
garbage collection type for any variable in the data/bss GC program.

In the linker, attach the Go type to an already-read C declaration
during dedup. This gives us Go types for C globals for free as long
as the cmd/dist-generated Go code contains the declaration.
(Most runtime C declarations have a corresponding Go declaration.
Both are bss declarations and so the linker dedups them.)

In cmd/dist, add a few more C files to the auto-Go-declaration list
in order to get Go type information for the C declarations into the linker.

In C compiler, mark all non-pointer-containing global declarations
and all string data as NOPTR. This allows them to exist in C files
without any corresponding Go declaration. Count C function pointers
as "non-pointer-containing", since we have no heap-allocated C functions.

In runtime, add NOPTR to the remaining pointer-containing declarations,
none of which refer to Go heap objects.

In runtime, also move os.Args and syscall.envs data into runtime-owned
variables. Otherwise, in programs that do not import os or syscall, the
runtime variables named os.Args and syscall.envs will be missing type
information.

I believe that this CL eliminates the final source of conservative GC scanning
in non-SWIG Go programs, and therefore...

Before, Syscall and friends were having their arguments
treated conservatively. Now they will use the Go prototype,
which will mean the arguments are not considered pointers
at all.

This is safe because of CL 139360044.

The fact that all these non-Solaris systems were using
conservative scanning of the Syscall arguments is why
the failure that prompted CL 139360044 was only
observed on Solaris, which does something completely different.
If we'd done this earlier, we'd have seen the Solaris
failure in more places.

Russ Cox cf622d758c syscall: keep allocated C string live across call to Syscall
Given:

        p := alloc()
        fn_taking_ptr(p)

p is NOT recorded as live at the call to fn_taking_ptr:
it's not needed by the code following the call.
p was passed to fn_taking_ptr, and fn_taking_ptr must keep
it alive as long as it needs it.
In practice, fn_taking_ptr will keep its own arguments live
for as long as the function is executing.

But if instead you have:

        p := alloc()
        i := uintptr(unsafe.Pointer(p))
        fn_taking_int(i)

p is STILL NOT recorded as live at the call to fn_taking_int:
it's not needed by the code following the call.
fn_taking_int is responsible for keeping its own arguments
live, but fn_taking_int is written to take an integer, so even
though fn_taking_int does keep its argument live, that argument
does not keep the allocated memory live, because the garbage
collector does not dereference integers.

The shorter form:

        p := alloc()
        fn_taking_int(uintptr(unsafe.Pointer(p)))

and the even shorter form:

        fn_taking_int(uintptr(unsafe.Pointer(alloc())))

are both the same as the 3-line form above.

syscall.Syscall is like fn_taking_int: it is written to take a list
of integers, and yet those integers are sometimes pointers.
If there is no other copy of those pointers being kept live,
the memory they point at may be garbage collected during
the call to syscall.Syscall.

This is happening on Solaris: for whatever reason, the timing
is such that the garbage collector manages to free the string
argument to the open(2) system call before the system call
has been invoked.

Change the system call wrappers to insert explicit references
that will keep the allocations alive in the original frame
(and therefore preserve the memory) until after syscall.Syscall
has returned.

Should fix Solaris flakiness.

This is not a problem for cgo, because cgo wrappers have
correctly typed arguments.
