Austin Clements d45bf7228f runtime: define lock order between G status and channel lock
Currently, locking a G's stack by setting its status to _Gcopystack or
_Gscan is unordered with respect to channel locks. However, when we
make stack shrinking concurrent, stack shrinking will need to lock the
G and then acquire channel locks, which imposes an order on these.

Document this lock ordering and fix closechan to respect it.
Everything else already happens to respect it.

Austin Clements db72b41bcd runtime: protect sudog.elem with hchan.lock
Currently sudog.elem is never accessed concurrently, so in several
cases we drop the channel lock just before reading/writing the
sent/received value from/to sudog.elem. However, concurrent stack
shrinking is going to have to adjust sudog.elem to point to the new
stack, which means it needs a way to synchronize with accesses to
sudog.elem. Hence, add sudog.elem to the fields protected by
hchan.lock and scoot the unlocks down past the uses of sudog.elem.

While we're here, better document the channel synchronization rules.

Austin Clements e4a95b6343 runtime: record channel in sudog
Given a G, there's currently no way to find the channel it's blocking
on. We'll need this information to fix a (probably theoretical) bug in
select and to implement concurrent stack shrinking, so record the
channel in the sudog.

Brad Fitzpatrick 5fea2ccc77 all: single space after period.
The tree's pretty inconsistent about single space vs double space
after a period in documentation. Make it consistently a single space,
per earlier decisions. This means contributors won't be confused by
misleading precedence.

This CL doesn't use go/doc to parse. It only addresses // comments.
It was generated with:

Austin Clements 1e91e2a25a runtime: document non-obvious requirement on sudog.elem
The channel code must not allow stack splits between when it assigns a
potential stack pointer to sudog.elem (or sudog.selectdone) and when
it makes the sudog visible to copystack by putting it on the g.waiting
list. We do get this right everywhere, but add a comment about this
subtlety for future eyes.

Michael Matloob 67faca7d9c runtime: break atomics out into package runtime/internal/atomic
This change breaks out most of the atomics functions in the runtime
into package runtime/internal/atomic. It adds some basic support
in the toolchain for runtime packages, and also modifies linux/arm
atomics to remove the dependency on the runtime's mutex. The mutexes
have been replaced with spinlocks.

all trybots are happy!
In addition to the trybots, I've tested on the darwin/arm64 builder,
on the darwin/arm builder, and on a ppc64le machine.

Keith Randall e410a527b2 runtime: simplify chan ops, take 2
This change is the same as CL #9345 which was reverted,
except for a small bug fix.

The only change is to the body of sendDirect and its callsite.
Also added a test.

The problem was during a channel send operation.  The target
of the send was a sleeping goroutine waiting to receive.  We
basically do:
1) Read the destination pointer out of the sudog structure
2) Copy the value we're sending to that destination pointer
Unfortunately, the previous change had a goroutine suspend
point between 1 & 2 (the call to sendDirect).  At that point
the destination goroutine's stack could be copied (shrunk).
The pointer we read in step 1 is no longer valid for step 2.

Fixed by not allowing any suspension points between 1 & 2.
I suspect the old code worked correctly basically by accident.

The original 9345:

This change removes the retry mechanism we use for buffered channels.
Instead, any sender waking up a receiver or vice versa completes the
full protocol with its counterpart.  This means the counterpart does
not need to relock the channel when it wakes up.  (Currently
buffered channels need to relock on wakeup.)

For sends on a channel with waiting receivers, this change replaces
two copies (sender->queue, queue->receiver) with one (sender->receiver).
For receives on channels with a waiting sender, two copies are still required.

This change unifies to a large degree the algorithm for buffered
and unbuffered channels, simplifying the overall implementation.

Ian Lance Taylor 73f329f472 runtime, syscall: add calls to msan functions
Add explicit memory sanitizer instrumentation to the runtime and syscall
packages.  The compiler does not instrument the runtime package.  It
does instrument the syscall package, but we need to add a couple of
cases that it can't see.

Russ Cox 80ec711755 runtime: use type-based write barrier for remote stack write during chansend
A send on an unbuffered channel to a blocked receiver is the only
case in the runtime where one goroutine writes directly to the stack
of another. The garbage collector assumes that if a goroutine is
blocked, its stack contains no new pointers since the last time it ran.
The send on an unbuffered channel violates this, so it needs an
explicit write barrier. It has an explicit write barrier, but not one that
can handle a write to another stack. Use one that can (based on type bitmap
instead of heap bitmap).

To make this work, raise the limit for type bitmaps so that they are
used for all types up to 64 kB in size (256 bytes of bitmap).
(The runtime already imposes a limit of 64 kB for a channel element size.)

I have been unable to reproduce this problem in a simple test program.

Dmitry Vyukov 4396ea96c4 runtime: remove futile wakeups from trace
Channels and sync.Mutex'es allow another goroutine to acquire resource
ahead of an unblocked goroutine. This is good for performance, but
leads to futile wakeups (the unblocked goroutine needs to block again).
Futile wakeups caused user confusion during the very first evaluation
of tracing functionality on a real server (a goroutine as if acquires a mutex
in a loop, while there is no loop in user code).

This change detects futile wakeups on channels and emits a special event
to denote the fact. Later parser finds entire wakeup sequences
(unblock->start->block) and removes them.

sync.Mutex will be supported in a separate change.

Russ Cox b3932baba4 runtime: fix sudog leak
The SudoG used to sit on the stack, so it was cheap to allocated
and didn't need to be cleaned up when finished.

For the conversion to Go, we had to move sudog off the stack
for a few reasons, so we added a cache of recently used sudogs
to keep allocation cheap. But we didn't add any of the necessary
cleanup before adding a SudoG to the new cache, and so the cached
SudoGs had stale pointers inside them that have caused all sorts
of awful, hard to debug problems.

CL 155760043 made sure SudoG.elem is cleaned up.
CL 150520043 made sure SudoG.selectdone is cleaned up.

This CL makes sure SudoG.next, SudoG.prev, and SudoG.waitlink
are cleaned up. I should have done this when I did the other two
fields; instead I wasted a week tracking down a leak they caused.

A dangling SudoG.waitlink can point into a sudogcache list that
has been "forgotten" in order to let the GC collect it, but that
dangling .waitlink keeps the list from being collected.
And then the list holding the SudoG with the dangling waitlink
can find itself in the same situation, and so on. We end up
with lists of lists of unusable SudoGs that are still linked into
the object graph and never collected (given the right mix of
non-trivial selects and non-channel synchronization).

modified only as necessary to make it compile and run.

In channels, zeroing of gp.waiting is missed on a closed channel panic.
m.morebuf.g is not zeroed.

I don't expect the latter causes any problems, but just in case.

Russ Cox 0120f8378d runtime: clear stale values from G.param and SudoG.elem
This change was necessary on the dev.garbage branch
to keep the garbage collector from seeing pointers into
invalid heap areas.

On this default (Go 1.4) branch, the change removes
some possibility for memory leaks.

Russ Cox d2574e2adb runtime: remove duplicated Go constants
The C header files are the single point of truth:
every C enum constant Foo is available to Go as _Foo.
Remove or redirect duplicate Go declarations so they
cannot be out of sync.

Eventually we will need to put constants in Go, but for now having
them be out of sync with C is too risky. These predate the build
support for auto-generating Go constants from the C definitions.

Russ Cox bffb0590c1 runtime: merge mallocgc, gomallocgc
I assumed they were the same when I wrote
cgocallback.go earlier today. Merge them
to eliminate confusion.

I can't tell what gomallocgc did before with
a nil type but without FlagNoScan.
I created a call like that in cgocallback.go
this morning, translating from a C file.
It was supposed to do what the C version did,
namely treat the block conservatively.
Now it will.
