Karthik Nayak d25f906682 internal/lsp: do not block on channel when there is an error
In `internal/lsp/cmd.(*connection).diagnoseFiles`, when we request for
`gopls/diagnoseFiles`, we are blocked on the channel even if there is an error.
In such a scenario, we've reach a deadlock since. Avoid this by checking for
error, existing if it exists and also closing the channel while we're at it.

Rob Findley 7b9993c5d2 internal/lsp/cmd: add a command-line command to start daemon debugging
Rename the 'inspect' command to 'remote', since it makes more sense for
the command to be scoped to interactions with the gopls remote. Add a
new subcommand 'debug' to start the debug server. Leave an aliased
'inspect' command for now. I'm 99% sure nobody is using it, so we can
remove the alias in a month.

Move some things around in the lsprpc package to improve factoring a

pjw dbc8747628 internal/lsp/semantic: avoid doing semantic tokens for large files
LSP (and gopls) support both full-file semantic token requests and
requests for just a range, typically roughly what's visible to the user.
It can be slow to produce the full set for a very large file, so
this code now responds with an error if the file is bigger than
100,000 bytes. After getting this error, vscode, at least,
will stop asking for full requests and use range requests.

Alternatively, server capabilities could say gopls never responds to
full-file requests, but doing that doesn't stop vscode from asking for
them. Another possibility would be to fix a time limit (like 8ms) for
how long to spend generating full-file semantic tokens. That's tricky
to get right, but one could instead generate an error when there
are more than 4,000 semantic tokens (on my laptop, that's about 8ms.)

Large files are unusual; a simple size limit seems adequate for now.

Heschi Kreinick 144d5ced6b internal/lsp: run type error analyzers as part of diagnostics
Type error analyzers can be viewed as enhancing type errors, rather
than analyzers in their own right. Create a source.DiagnosePackage
function that combines the list/parse/typecheck diagnostics with type
error analyzers. This allows us to remove some special cases from the
analysis path, and is a first step in removing all the special
handling for analysis quick fixes.

Along the way:
Pass pointers to source.Analyzer after I spent half an hour chasing a
loop capture bug. Spend a further 2-3 hours chasing slowdown in the
command tests as a result.

Move Unnecessary tag generation into diagnostic creation rather than
as a mutating post-processing step that required cloning diagnostics.

Peter Weinbergr a2250d31f3 internal/lsp: add gopls semtok command and semantic token tests
The command 'gopls semtok <file>.go' produces a version of <file>.go
decorated with comments describing tokens as semantic tokens. The
format is described towards the top of cmd/semantictokens.go.

There are also tests in testdata/semantic/. a.go is used by lsp_test.go
(with -cover) to show that essentially all of semantic.go is executed.
b.go illustrates the handling of strange, but legal, constructs
like 'const false = nil and non-ascii'. The .golden files show
the expected results.

The implementation will panic, rather than log, on unexpected state.

gopls semtok has been run on all the .go files in x/tools and in
the source distribution. There were no unexpected messages nor panics.

Factor out processing of string enums when setting options results. In a
couple places this will result in errors being detected for invalid
values where they weren't before. Interestingly the default branch for
symbolMatcher was 'caseInsensitive', when in fact the default matcher in

relying on this bug, passing 'default' to mean 'caseInsensitive'. Fix

Heschi Kreinick 6a8222ee25 gopls/doc: generate settings JSON, docs
gopls has many settings. We want to automatically generate
documentation, and we want to allow clients to perform their own
validation if they so desire.

Using all three of AST, type information, and reflection, generate a
JSON description of the settings and their default values. Add a gopls
command that prints it. Add a documentation generator that uses it to
write settings.md.

I assumed that everything not explicitly documented was experimental,
and moved it into that section. I also moved expandWorkspaceToModule to
experimental; I hope it's not long for this world, personally.

Along the way, rename many fields, make the enum matching case
insensitive, and add a stringer call so that the defaults print nicely.

Rebecca Stambler 37a045f3b9 internal/lsp: move undeclaredname suggested fix out of analysis
This CL is a follow-up from CL 241983. I didn't realize that the
undeclaredname analysis was also using the go/printer.Fprint trick,
which we decided was both incorrect and inefficient. This CL does
approximately the same things as CL 241983, with a few changes to make
the approach more general.

source.Analyzer now has a field to indicate if its suggested fix needs
to be computed separately, and that is used to determine which
code actions get commands. We also make helper functions to map
analyses to their commands.

I figured out a neater way to test suggested fixes in this CL, so I
reversed the move to source_test back to lsp_test (which was the right
place all along).

Rob Findley f2c07d7d8e internal/lsp/lsprpc: improvements to daemon logging
The gopls daemon had different default logging behavior than the sidecar
gopls: by default, the daemon was started with -logfile=auto.
Additionally, because most logs are reflected back to the forwarder, the
actual daemon logs have very little (if any) information.

This means that if you simply start gopls with -remote=auto, you'll get
a single logfile named /tmp/gopls-<pid>.log, which is mostly empty. This
is not a delightful experience.

Fix this via several improvements:
+ Log lifecycle events in the Daemon, to give the log a purpose.
+ Give the daemon a new default log location:
   /tmp/gopls-daemon-<pid>.log.
+ Don't pass -logfile=auto to the daemon by default.

Rob Findley 30fd94b347 internal/lsp/lsprpc: expose configuration for auto-started daemon
Three new flags are added to the serve command, and threaded through to
the LSP forwarder:
 -remote.listen.timeout: -listen.timeout for the auto-started daemon
-remote.debug: -debug for the auto-started daemon
-remote.logfile: -logfile for the auto-started daemon

As part of this change, no longer enable debugging the daemon by
default.

Notably none of this configuration affects serving, so modifying this
configuration has been chosen not to change the path to the automatic
daemon. In other words, this configuration has effect only for the
forwarder process that starts the daemon: all others will connect to the
daemon and inherit whatever configuration it had at startup. This should
be OK, because in the common case this configuration should be static
across all clients (e.g., many Vim sessions all sharing the same
.vimrc).

Exposing this configuration made the signature of lsprpc.NewForwarder
a bit hard to understand, so I decided to go ahead and switch to a
variadic options pattern for initializing both the Forwarder and
StreamServer, the latter just for consistency with the Forwarder.

For tests (and perhaps later, for daemon discovery), unix domain sockets
offer advantages over TCP: we can know the exact socket address that will be

security advantages over TCP, and were specifically requested on
golang.org/issues/34111.

This CL adds support for listening on UDS, and uses this to implement an
additional regtest environment mode that starts up an external process.
This mode is disabled by default, but may be enabled by the
-enable_gopls_subprocess_tests.

The regtest TestMain may be hijacked to instead run as gopls, if a
special environment variable is set. This allows the the test runner to
start a separate process by using os.Argv[0]. The -gopls_test_binary
flag may be used to point tests at a separate gopls binary.

Rob Findley c29062fe1d internal/lsp: refactor LSP server instantiation
Previously, the process of instantiating and running the LSP server was
sharded across the lsp, protocol, and cmd packages, and this resulted in
some APIs that are hard to work with. For example, it's hard to guess
the difference between lsp.NewClientServer, lsp.NewServer,
protocol.NewServer (which returns a client), and protocol.NewClient
(which returns a server).

This change reorganizes Server instantiation as follows:

+ The lsp.Server is now purely an implementation of the protocol.Server
interface. It is no longer responsible for installing itself into the
jsonrpc2 Stream, nor for running itself.

+ A new package 'lsprpc' is added, to implement the logic of binding an
incoming connection to an LSP server session. This is put in a
separate package for lack of a clear home: it didn't really
philosophically belong in any of the lsp, cmd, or protocol packages.
We can perhaps move it to cmd in the future, but I'd like to keep it
as a separate package while I develop request forwarding.

   simplified import graph:

    jsonrpc2 ⭠ lsprpc ⭠ cmd
               ⭩ ⭦
            lsp (t.b.d. client tests)
           ⭩ ⭨
     protocol source

+ The jsonrpc2 package is extended to have a minimal API for running a
'StreamServer': something analogous to an HTTP server that listens
for new connections and delegates to a handler (but we couldn't use
the word 'Handler' for this delegate as it was already taken).

After these changes, I hope that the concerns of "serving the LSP",
"serving jsonrpc2", and "installing the LSP on jsonrpc2" are more
logically organized, though one legitimate criticism is that the word
'Server' is still heavily overloaded.

This change prepares a subsequent change which hijacks the jsonrpc2
connection when forwarding messages to a shared gopls instance.

To test this change, the following improvements are made:

+ A servertest package is added to make it easier to run a test against
an in-process jsonrpc2 server. For now, this uses TCP but it could
easily be modified to use io.Pipe.

+ cmd tests are updated to use the servertest package. Unfortunately it
wasn't yet possible to eliminate the concept of `remote=internal` in
favor of just using multiple sessions, because view initialization
involves calling both `go env` and `packages.Load`, which slow down
session startup significantly. See also golang.org/issue/35968.

Instead, the syntax for `-remote=internal` is modified to be
   `-remote=internal@127.0.0.1:12345`.

+ An additional test for request cancellation is added for the
sessionserver package. This test uncovered a bug: when calling
Canceller.Cancel, we were using id rather than &id, which resulted in
incorrect json serialization (as only the pointer receiver implements
   the json.Marshaller interface).
