We were already using a token.File-agnostic position for object
positions in our references algorithm, but still relied on token.Pos for
identifying duplicate references. This breaks down when a file may have
multiple parsed representations in different packages.
While we should endeavor to eliminate duplicate parsing, our algorithms
should not rely on this for correctness. Update the reference
de-duplication to use the same position key as object search.

span.NewRange now accepts a *token.File and two token.Pos.
It is the caller's responsibility to look up the File
in the FileSet, if necessary (it usually isn't), and to
ensure the Pos values are valid. Ditto NewMappedRange.
This reduces the creep of Snapshot into functions that
have no need to know about it. Also the bug.Report call
in NewRange has been pushed up into the caller and
logically eliminated in all but one case.
I think we should aim for the invariant that functions that
operate on a single file should accept a *token.File, not
a FileSet; only functions that operate on sets of files
(e.g. type checking, analysis) should use a FileSet.
This is not always possible: some public functions
accept a FileSet only to re-lookup a single file already
known to the caller; if necessary we could provide token.File
variants of these.
This may ultimately allow us to create a new FileSet per
call to the parser, so that Files and FileSets are in
1:1 correspondance and there is no global FileSet.
(It currently grows without bound, on the order of kilobytes
per keystroke.) FileSets containing multiple files,
needed when we interact with the type checker and analysis,
may be temporarily synthesized on demand from a set of Files,
analogous to mmap'ing a few files into a blank address space.
Also:
- replace File.Position(pos).Line by File.Line(pos)
- replace pos == token.NoPos by pos.IsValid()
- avoid fishy token.Pos conversions in link.go
- other minor simplifications

As of golang/go#50827, gopls no longer supports building at 1.12, and so
usage of golang.org/x/xerrors can be replaced with the native support for
error wrapping introduced in Go 1.13.
Remove this usage as a step toward eliminating the xerrors dependency
from x/tools.

When searching for references or renaming, we start from all packages
containing the current position. But as reported in golang/go#47564,
this fails if we're renaming an object in another package; we need to
start the search from the package containing the object definition.
This CL finds the missing packages by recursively searching all
locations we encounter. For now, this will cause us to consider the
object location, and may also help us behave correctly with respect to
build constraint variants in the future.
While at it, update the regtests to support renaming. This bug could
be exercised with marker tests, but it's good to have a regtest for
renaming anyway.

With the new ParseExported logic, we can lose some unexported fields on
exported structs. This can lead to misleading or malformatted hover
information.
Fix this by ensuring we always extract the Spec from a full parse. Since
this path is only hit via user-initiated requests (and should only be
hit ~once per request), it is preferable to do the parse on-demand
rather than parse via the cache and risk pinning the full AST for the
remaining duration of the session.

embedded field. This is conservatively isolated to just renames for now;

We currently have partial, untested support for symlinks. Remove all
support for now until we come up with a decision.
I thought we could re-enable the OpenBSD trybot since we think it was
failing because of the latency of evaluating symlinks, but it seems like
it's still failing.

In CL 259998 we added the ability to find calls to methods through
interfaces. That included very common interfaces like Stringer, which we
judged unfortunate but possibly acceptable. We didn't consider the
behavior when searching for references to a type. When searching for
references to a type that happens to be a Stringer, the user almost
certainly doesn't want to see all uses of the Stringer interface. Don't
consider interface references to types.
No tests; I don't think this is worth a regtest and the marker tests
can't check a negative AFAIK.

Completion is slowly becoming a large part of internal/lsp/source and it
makes sense to move to its own seperate package inside source to make
future refactors easier. As a part of this change, any unexported
members from source required by completion are now exported. Util
functions only required by completion are moved from
internal/lsp/source/util.go to internal/lsp/source/completion/util.go.

snapshot.View().Session().Cache().FileSet() has been driving me crazy
for a while. Add it to snapshot. Along the way, discover that the Cache
interface is now totally unused and delete it.
I also changed a bunch of View arguments to Snapshot while I was in the
area.

Just like ParseGoHandle, PackageHandle isn't very useful as part of the
public API. Remove it.
Having PackagesForFile take a URI rather than a FileHandle seems
reasonable, and made me wonder if that logic applies to other calls like
ParseGo. For now I'm going to stop here. I could also revert that part
of the change.

Due to the runtime's inability to collect cycles involving finalizers,
we can't close over handles in memoize.Functions without causing memory
leaks. Up until now we've dealt with that by closing over all the bits
of the snapshot that we want, but it distorts the design of all the code
used in the Functions.
We can solve the problem another way: instead of closing over the
snapshot/view, we can force the caller to pass it in. This is somewhat
scary: there is no requirement that the argument matches the data that
we're working with. But the reality is that this is not a new problem:
the Function used to calculate a cache value is not necessarily the one
that the caller expects. As long as the cache key fully identifies all
the inputs to the Function, the output should be correct. And since the
caller used the snapshot/view to calculate that cache key, it should
always be safe to pass in that snapshot/view. If it's not, then we
already had a bug.
The Arg type in memoize is clumsy, but I thought it would be nice to
have at least a little bit of type safety. I'm open to suggestions.

function. I also added an error return for builtins so that callers

The main goal is to push the package variant logic from internal/lsp
into internal/lsp/source so all users of internal/lsp/source benefit.
"references" and "rename" now have top-level source.References() and
source.Rename() entry points (as opposed to hanging off
source.Identifier()). I expanded objectsAtProtocolPos() to know about
implicit objects (type switch and import spec), and to
handle *ast.ImportSpec generically. This gets rid of special case
handling of *types.PkgName in various places.
The biggest practical benefit, though, is that "references" no longer
needs to compute the objectpath for every types.Object comparison it
does, instead using direct types.Object equality. This speeds up
"references" and "rename" a lot.
Two other notable improvements that fell out of not using
source.Identifier()'s logic:
- Finding references on an embedded field now shows references to the
field, not the type being embedded.
- Finding references on an imported object now works
correctly (previously it searched the importing package's dependents
rather than the imported package's dependents).
Finally, I refactored findIdentifier() to use pathEnclosingObjNode()
instead of astutil.PathEnclosingInterval. Now we only need a single
call to get the path because pathEnclosingObjNode() has the
"try pos || try pos-1" logic built in.

This change removes functions from the snapshot that return package IDs.
We prefer PackageHandles, since getting PackageHandles in a granular
fashion is not effective and causes us to spawn many `go list`
processes. By only ever returning PackageHandles, we can batch metadata
reloads for workspace packages. This enables us to add a check to
confirm that the snapshot is in a good state before returning important
data, like reverse dependencies and workspace package handles.

the case of the command-line interface (no identifier found when there

The initial workspace load was happening when a view was created, in serial.
It should really just be kicked off in a separate goroutine once we create a
new view. Implementing this change required some other significant changes,
particularly the additional work being done by the WorkspacePackageIDs
method.
Some other changes had to be made while debugging. In particular, the
modification to the circular dependencies test was a consequence of
golang/go#36265.

When looking for references, look in the entire workspace rather than
the same package. This makes the references query more expensive because
it needs to look at every package in the workspace, but hopefully
it shouln't be user-noticable. This can be made more efficient by only
checking packages that are transitive reverse dependencies. I don't think a
mechanism to get all transitive reverse dependencies exists yet.
One of the references test have been changed: it looked up references
of the builtin int type, but now there are so many refererences that
the test too slow and doesn't make sense any more. Instead look up
references of the type "i" in that file.

This change eliminates the need for the package cache map, and instead
stores package type information in the store. We still have to maintain
invalidation logic because the key is not computed correctly.

This relates to https://github.com/golang/go/issues/31374 and should switch all instances within `gopls` to use `x/errors` instead of `fmt` to create new errors.

Support renaming of identifiers in test packages. The packages for
all of the references must be checked and the changes need to be
deduped, since both a package and its test package contain some of the
same files.
