based on the total-ordering predicate in IEEE-754, section 5.10.

In particular,
* -NaN is ordered before any other value
* +NaN is ordered after any other value

* All other values are ordered the usual way

Ian Lance Taylor 0b9974d3f0 math/rand: use fastrand64 if possible
Now that the top-level math/rand functions are auto-seeded by default
(issue #54880), use the runtime fastrand64 function when 1) Seed
has not been called; 2) the GODEBUG randautoseed=0 is not used.

The benchmarks run quickly and are relatively noisy, but they show
significant improvements for parallel calls to the top-level functions.

Dmitry Panov 7f9ee2ba5b math: handle int64 overflows for odd integer exponents in Pow(-0, y)
The existing implementation does a float64 to int64 conversion in order to check whether the number is odd, however it does not check for overflows. If an overflow occurs, the result is implementation-defined and while it happens to work on amd64 and i386, it produces an incorrect result on arm64 and possibly other architectures.

This change fixes that and also avoids calling isOddInt altogether if the base is +0, because it's unnecessary.

(I was considering avoiding the extra check if runtime.GOARCH is "amd64" or "i386", but I can't see this pattern being used anywhere outside the tests. And having separate files with build tags just for isOddInt() seems like an overkill)

Russ Cox 213495a4a6 internal/godebug: export non-default-behavior counters in runtime/metrics
Allow GODEBUG users to report how many times a setting
resulted in non-default behavior.

Record non-default-behaviors for all existing GODEBUGs.

Also rework tests to ensure that runtime is in sync with runtime/metrics.All,
and generate docs mechanically from metrics.All.

Filippo Valsorda d7812ab380 crypto/internal/bigmod: move nat implementation out of crypto/rsa
This will let us reuse it in crypto/ecdsa for the NIST scalar fields.

The main change in API is around encoding and decoding. The SetBytes +
ExpandFor sequence was hacky: SetBytes could produce a bigger size than
the modulus if leading zeroes in the top byte overflowed the limb
boundary, so ExpandFor had to check for and tolerate that. Also, the
caller was responsible for checking that the overflow was actually all
zeroes (which we weren't doing, exposing a crasher in decryption and
signature verification) and then for checking that the result was less
than the modulus. Instead, make SetBytes take a modulus and return an
error if the value overflows. Same with Bytes: we were always allocating
based on Size before FillBytes anyway, so now Bytes takes a modulus.
Finally, SetBig was almost only used for moduli, so replaced
NewModulusFromNat and SetBig with NewModulusFromBig.

Moved the constant-time bitLen to math/big.Int.BitLen. It's slower, but
BitLen is primarily used in cryptographic code, so it's safer this way.

Russ Cox ad7dc8ad55 math/rand: deprecate Seed
Programs that call Seed and then expect a specific sequence
of results from the global random source (using functions such as Int)
can be broken when a dependency changes how much it consumes
from the global random source. To avoid such breakages, programs
that need a specific result sequence should use NewRand(NewSource(seed))
to obtain a random generator that other packages cannot access.

Fixes #56319.

Russ Cox ea4631cc0c internal/godebug: define more efficient API
We have been expanding our use of GODEBUG for compatibility,
and the current implementation forces a tradeoff between
freshness and efficiency. It parses the environment variable
in full each time it is called, which is expensive. But if clients
cache the result, they won't respond to run-time GODEBUG
changes, as happened with x509sha1 (#56436).

This CL changes the GODEBUG API to provide efficient,
up-to-date results. Instead of a single Get function,
New returns a *godebug.Setting that itself has a Get method.
Clients can save the result of New, which is no more expensive
than errors.New, in a global variable, and then call that
variable's Get method to get the value. Get costs only two
atomic loads in the case where the variable hasn't changed
since the last call.

Unfortunately, these changes do require importing sync
from godebug, which will mean that sync itself will never
be able to use a GODEBUG setting. That doesn't seem like
such a hardship. If it was really necessary, the runtime could
pass a setting to package sync itself at startup, with the
caveat that that setting, like the ones used by runtime itself,
would not respond to run-time GODEBUG changes.

ruinan d092f597d7 math/bits: directly calculate quo/rem when hi is zero in Div64
func Div64(hi, lo, y uint64) (quo, rem uint64) {...}

math/bits.Div64 returns the quotient and remainder of (hi, lo) divided
by y. When hi is zero, we can directly return lo/y, lo%y, which can save
a lot of unnecessary calculations.

The performance is measured on arm64 and the changes will only affect
the arch that doesn't have the intrinsic.

Montgomery multiplication can be used for Exp mod even m
by splitting it into two steps - Exp mod an odd number and
Exp mod a power of two - and then combining the two results
using the Chinese Remainder Theorem.

Riccardo Gerosa 91a1f0d918 math/big: improve performance of Binomial
This change improves the performance of Binomial by implementing an
algorithm that produces smaller intermediate values at each step.

Working with smaller big.Int values has the advantage that  fewer allocations
and computations are required for each mathematical operation.

The algorithm used is the Multiplicative Formula, which is a well known
way of calculating the Binomial coefficient and is described at:

In addition to that, an optimization has been made to remove a
redundant computation of (i+1) on each loop which has a measurable
impact when using big.Int.

Performance improvement measured on an M1 MacBook Pro
running the existing benchmark for Binomial:

Russ Cox 90a67d052e math/rand: auto-seed global source
Implement proposal #54880, to automatically seed the global source.

The justification for this not being a breaking change is that any
use of the global source in a package's init function or exported API
clearly must be valid - that is, if a package changes how much
randomness it consumes at init time or in an exported API, that
clearly isn't the kind of breaking change that requires issuing a v2
of that package. That kind of per-package change in the position
of the global source is indistinguishable from seeding the global
source differently. So if the per-package change is valid, so is auto-seeding.

And then, of course, auto-seeding means that packages will be
far less likely to depend on the specific results of the global source
and therefore not break when those kinds of per-package changes
happen in the future.

Seed(1) can be called in programs that need the old sequence from
the global source and want to restore the old behavior.
Of course, those programs will still be broken by the per-package
changes just described, and it would be better for them to allocate
local sources rather than continue to use the global one.

Fixes #54880.

Nick Craig-Wood 9e7c5030d0 math/bits: note that functions here may be compiler intrinsics

the documentation.

This change adapts the wording of the release notes and puts it in the

Wayne Zuo c8000a18d6 cmd/compile,math: remove all sqrt assembly code
This CL make math.sqrt an intrinsic function, math.Sqrt is not affected
since compiler can inline it. With this change, we can remove all assembly
code for math.Sqrt that aims to speed up indirect call. The go compiler can
generate same or faster code (with regabi) for indirect call.

Since when that test requires inlining, which is disabled on noopt
builder.

Keith Randall d42b520b03 math/big: make NewInt inlineable and zero allocation
Mark the assembly routines as not escaping their arguments.

Add a special case to NewInt that, when inlined, can do all
of its allocations (a big.Int and a [1]Word) on the stack.

The struct in the doc comment in debug/dwarf/type.go
was fixed up by hand to indent the first and last lines as well.

Nathan VanBenschoten 831f116828 math/big: don't force second arg to Jacobi and Int.ModSqrt to escape
This CL updates big.Jacobi to avoid forcing its y argument to escape
to the heap. The argument was escaping because it was being passed
through an empty interface to fmt.Sprintf during an assertion failure.
As a result, callers of Jacobi and Int.ModSqrt (which calls Jacobi)
could not keep this value on the stack.

Noticed when working on https://github.com/cockroachdb/apd/pull/103.

This marks the end of development on dev.boringcrypto.

Filippo Valsorda 89044b6d42 math/big: add comprehensive aliasing tests (and minor fixes to Exp, Rand)
TestAlias checks systematically for aliasing issues, where passing the
same value for an argument and the receiver leads to incorrect results.

We had a number of issues like that over the years:

    - #31084: Lsh on arm64
    - #30217: GCD
    - #22830: Exp due to divLarge
    - #22265: ModSqrt
    - #20490: Add and Sub
    - #11284: GCD

This CL also fixes two new minor bugs that the test found. A wrong
result would be returned by

    - Exp when the modulo and the receiver alias
    - Rand when the limit is negative and it aliases the receiver

The test runs in ~0.05s with the default -quickchecks value.

Joe Tsai 62b8ec744b math: improve documentation of Copysign
Name the arguments in a way that is more self-describing.
Many code editor tools show a snippet of the function and
its arguments. However, "x" and "y" are not helpful in determining
which is the sign and which is the magnitude,
short of reading the documentation itself.

Name the sign argument as "sign" to be explicit.
This follows the same naming convention as IsInf.

Russ Cox 7d87ccc860 all: fix various doc comment formatting nits
A run of lines that are indented with any number of spaces or tabs
format as a <pre> block. This commit fixes various doc comments
that format badly according to that (standard) rule.

For example, consider:

	// - List item.
	//   Second line.
	// - Another item.

Because the - lines are unindented, this is actually two paragraphs
separated by a one-line <pre> block. This CL rewrites it to:

	//  - List item.
	//    Second line.
	//  - Another item.

Today, that will format as a single <pre> block.
In a future release, we hope to format it as a bulleted list.

Various other minor fixes as well, all in preparation for reformatting.

Shulhan a80070e0cf math/big: call norm when returning success from Rat SetString
After CL 24430, reflect.DeepEqual no longer returns true when comparing
a *Rat built with (*Rat).SetString("0") with one built with
(*Rat).SetInt64(0).
These should be equivalent, but because (*Rat).SetString does not call
norm() when returning the zero value, the result of reflect.DeepEqual
will be false.

One could suggest that developers should use (*Rat).Cmp instead
of relying on reflect.DeepEqual, but if a (*Rat) is part of a
larger struct that is being compared, this can be cumbersome.

This is fixed by calling z.norm() when returning zero in SetString.

Russ Cox 07525e16ba math/big: fix spurious race in Rat.Denom, Float.SetRat
Rat maintains the invariant that x.b.neg is always false,
but Rat.Denom was writing x.b.neg = false itself too.
That makes Rat.Denom a writing operation, when it should
be a read-only operation. That in turn makes it unsafe to
use from multiple goroutines, which is highly unexpected.
Make it read-only and therefore race-free again.

Fixes #50473.

Russ Cox 2580d0e08d all: gofmt -w -r 'interface{} -> any' src
And then revert the bootstrap cmd directories and certain testdata.
And adjust tests as needed.

Not reverting the changes in std that are bootstrapped,
because some of those changes would appear in API docs,
and we want to use any consistently.
Instead, rewrite 'any' to 'interface{}' in cmd/dist for those directories
when preparing the bootstrap copy.

A few files changed as a result of running gofmt -w
not because of interface{} -> any but because they
hadn't been updated for the new //go:build lines.

Fixes #49884.

Russ Cox f229e7031a all: go fix -fix=buildtag std cmd (except for bootstrap deps, vendor)
When these packages are released as part of Go 1.18,
Go 1.16 will no longer be supported, so we can remove
the +build tags in these files.

Ran go fix -fix=buildtag std cmd and then reverted the bootstrapDirs
as defined in src/cmd/dist/buildtool.go, which need to continue
to build with Go 1.4 for now.

Also reverted src/vendor and src/cmd/vendor, which will need
to be updated in their own repos first.

Manual changes in runtime/pprof/mprof_test.go to adjust line numbers.

For #41184.

Russ Cox 139e935d3c math/big: comment division
The comments in the code refer to Knuth and to Burnikel and Ziegler,
but Knuth's presentation is inscrutable, and our recursive division
code does not bear much resemblance to Burnikel and Ziegler's paper
(which is fine, ours is nicer).

Add a standalone explanation of division instead of referring to
difficult or not-directly-used references.

Robert Griesemer 3498027329 math: increase precision of math.SmallestNonzeroFloat64
The original value was rounded too early, which lead to the
surprising behavior that float64(math.SmallestNonzeroFloat64 / 2)
wasn't 0. That is, the exact compile-time computation of
math.SmallestNonzeroFloat64 / 2 resulted in a value that was
rounded up when converting to float64. To address this, added 3
more digits to the mantissa, ending in a 0.

While at it, also slightly increased the precision of MaxFloat64
to end in a 0.

Added a test to verify expected behavior.

In contrast to the other (irrational) constants, expanding these
extreme values to more digits is unlikely to be important as they
are not going to appear in numeric computations except for tests
verifying their correctness (as is the case here).

Re-enabled a disabled test in go/types and types2.

Paschalis Tsilias cbb3f09047 testing: add -shuffle=off|on|N to alter the execution order of tests and benchmarks
This CL adds a new flag to the testing package and the go test command
which randomizes the execution order for tests and benchmarks.
This can be useful for identifying unwanted dependencies
between test or benchmark functions.
The flag is off by default. If `-shuffle` is set to `on` then the system
clock will be used as the seed value. If `-shuffle` is set to an integer
N, then N will be used as the seed value. In both cases, the seed will
be reported for failed runs so that they can reproduced later on.

Austin Clements 1d20a362d0 math: avoid assembly stubs
Currently almost all math functions have the following pattern:

func Sin(x float64) float64

func sin(x float64) float64 {
    // ... pure Go implementation ...
}

Architectures that implement a function in assembly provide the
assembly implementation directly as the exported function (e.g., Sin),
and architectures that don't implement it in assembly use a small stub
to jump back to the Go code, like:

TEXT ·Sin(SB), NOSPLIT, $0
	JMP ·sin(SB)

However, most functions are not implemented in assembly on most
architectures, so this jump through assembly is a waste. It defeats
compiler optimizations like inlining. And, with regabi, it actually
adds a small but non-trivial overhead because the jump from assembly
back to Go must go through an ABI0->ABIInternal bridge function.

Hence, this CL reorganizes this structure across the entire package.
It now leans on inlining to achieve peak performance, but allows the
compiler to see all the way through the pure Go implementation.

Now, functions follow this pattern:

	return sin(x)

func sin(x float64) float64 {
    // ... pure Go implementation ...
}

Architectures that have assembly implementations use build-tagged
files to set haveArchX to true an provide an archX implementation.
That implementation can also still call back into the Go
implementation (some of them do this).

Prior to this change, enabling ABI wrappers results in a geomean
slowdown of the math benchmarks of 8.77% (full results:
https://perf.golang.org/search?q=upload:20210415.6) and of the Tile38
benchmarks by ~4%. After this change, enabling ABI wrappers is
completely performance-neutral on Tile38 and all but one math
benchmark (full results:
https://perf.golang.org/search?q=upload:20210415.7). ABI wrappers slow
down SqrtIndirectLatency-12 by 2.09%, which makes sense because that
call must still go through an ABI wrapper.

With ABI wrappers disabled (which won't be an option on amd64 much
longer), on linux/amd64, this change is largely performance-neutral
and slightly improves the performance of a few benchmarks:

(Because there are so many benchmarks, I've applied the Šidák
correction to the alpha threshold. It makes relatively little
difference in which benchmarks are statistically significant.)

smasher164 6f90ee36e9 math: simplify comparison in FMA when swapping p and z
Discovered by Junchen Li on CL 246858, the comparison before p and z are
swapped can be simplified from

    pe < ze || (pe == ze && (pm1 < zm1 || (pm1 == zm1 && pm2 < zm2)))

to

    pe < ze || pe == ze && pm1 < zm1

because zm2 is initialized to 0 before the branch.

Cherry Zhang 0e31de280f math/big: don't require runtime.(*Frame).Next symbol present
I don't know why the test requires runtime.(*Frame).Next symbol
present in the binary under test. I assume it is just some
sanity check? With CL 268479 runtime.(*Frame).Next can be pruned
by the linker. Replace it with runtime.main which should always
be present.

May fix the longtest builders.

Make explicit a shrVU_g precondition.
Replace i with i+1 throughout the loop.
The resulting loop is functionally identical,
but the compiler can do better BCE without the i-1 slice offset.

fanzha02 2b50ab2aee cmd/compile: optimize single-precision floating point square root
Add generic rule to rewrite the single-precision square root expression
with one single-precision instruction. The optimization will reduce two
times of precision converting between double-precision and single-precision.

On arm64 flatform.

Russ Cox 474d5f4f4d math: remove most 387 implementations
The Surface Pro X's 386 simulator is not completely faithful to a real 387.
The most egregious problem is that it computes Log2(8) as 2.9999999999999996,
but it has some other subtler problems as well. All the problems occur in
routines that we don't even bother with assembly for on amd64.
If the speed of Go code is OK on amd64 it should be OK on 386 too.
Just remove all the 386-only assembly functions.

This leaves Ceil, Floor, Trunc, Hypot, and Sqrt in 386 assembly,
all of which are also in assembly on amd64 and all of which pass
their tests on Surface Pro X.

Compared to amd64, the 386 port omits assembly for Min, Max, and Log.
It never had Min and Max, and this CL deletes Log because Log2 wasn't
even correct. (None of the other architectures have assembly Log either.)

Katie Hockman e491c6eea9 math/big: fix comment in divRecursiveStep
There appears to be a typo in the description of
the recursive division algorithm.

Two things seem suspicious with the original comment:
  1. It is talking about choosing s, but s doesn't
     appear anywhere in the equation.
  2. The math in the equation is incorrect.

Where
  B = len(v)/2
  s = B - 1

Proof that it is incorrect:
    len(v) - B >= B + 1
    len(v) - len(v)/2 >= len(v)/2 + 1

    This doesn't hold if len(v) is even, e.g. 10:
    10 - 10/2 >= 10/2 + 1
    10 - 5 >= 5 + 1
    5 >= 6  // this is false

The new equation will be the following,
which will be mathematically correct:
    len(v) - s >= B + 1
    len(v) - (len(v)/2 - 1) >= len(v)/2 + 1
    len(v) - len(v)/2 + 1 >= len(v)/2 + 1
    len(v) - len(v)/2 >= len(v)/2

    This holds if len(v) is even or odd.

    e.g. 10
    10 - 10/2 >= 10/2
    10 - 5 >= 5
    5 >= 5

    e.g. 11
    11 - 11/2 >= 11/2
    11 - 5 >= 5
    6 >= 5

Russ Cox 4f1b0a44cb all: update to use os.ReadFile, os.WriteFile, os.CreateTemp, os.MkdirTemp
As part of #42026, these helpers from io/ioutil were moved to os.
(ioutil.TempFile and TempDir became os.CreateTemp and MkdirTemp.)

Update the Go tree to use the preferred names.

As usual, code compiled with the Go 1.4 bootstrap toolchain
and code vendored from other sources is excluded.

ReadDir changes are in a separate CL, because they are not a
simple search and replace.
